Archives for category: Bugs and glitches

Comments like this one from Aimee have been coming in all week from players who built all the Boardwalk with donuts before getting very far with the Squidport quest:

I’m stuck on part 6, I’ve maxed out my boardwalk pieces and have the Ferris wheel and Planet Hype but no matter how many times I store everything away (Houseboat, Boardwalk, Itchy and Scratchy Store and everything else) and then put it back out it still keeps asking me to build boardwalk pieces. What can I do?

This is a tricky one, and obviously it’s something that EA recognized may have been a problem, as the update before last changed the Ferris Wheel and Planet Hype unlock to Squidport part 5, rather than part 6. But while, for some people in this situation, the game just jumps ahead and skips the Boardwalk decorations and the Malaria Zone, for others, progress remains firmly stuck. And while there is a solution, it doesn’t seem to work for everyone.

For some people, scaling back the Boardwalk to just six pieces, storing away everything, then replacing only the Houseboat and the Itchy and Scratchy Store seems to have worked, being careful not to expand beyond the 8 pieces you need at that stage. For others, storing everything and then moving the Entrance down the coast a bit is necessary for doing any of this. But it doesn’t seem to work for everyone.

So, if you’ve managed to get over this particular glitch, please let us know how you fixed it (I know that a few of you have). And for everyone else, don’t be in to much of a hurry to speed up your Boardwalk section production and complete your Boardwalk.

Tapped Out doesn’t have a lot of glitches that are both harmless and fun, and that means that the texture glitch falls into a category all of its own.

For those unfamiliar with it, this glitch does temporarily replaces your buildings or decorations with parts of a completely different building or decoration – or even a character. Sometimes it switches your building image completely. And it can pick up images of things that you don’t actually have in your game – for example, those of you who have been commenting on seeing eggs and toilet paper in your town are seeing a texture glitch coming made up of Halloween items! While they’re usually easily fixed by scrolling away from the affected area and then scrolling back, texture glitches can produce some rather odd images.

Here are some screenshots I took from my game the other day when a line of trees was temporarily replaced by a varying line of Boardwalk Performers:

So, in response to the recent spate of texture glitch comments and requests for a new post, feel free to upload any of your recent texture glitches to an image site and post them here. In th meantime, if you’d like to see some more texture glitches, take a look at these posts:

Here’s a repost from a while back when the blog was fairly new – since we are coming up to ten million visitors and questions like this are becoming common, I deemed it useful to throw this back into the ring. Rcsprinter

There’s a radical solution to the crashing problem, where the game throws you out completely after a few minutes of play. But before you try it, it’s important to try everything else:

1. Deleting the game and downloading it again from the app store
2. Doing a hard reset – read how here.
3. Logging in on someone else’s device – how to
4. Removing decorations – advice on that
5. Deleting friends – click for directions
6. Freeing up some memory on your device by deleting unused apps
7. Play the game over broadband wifi rather than 3G/4G to see if there is a difference in reliability

If none of the above works, some of your game files my be corrupt, in which case you can try something that seems to have worked for a friend of mine: resetting your device. This is what he did.

1. Delete the Tapped Out app (I suggest visiting the friends screen and then coming back to your town to ensure you are synced first)
2. Backup your iPad or iPhone or iPod Touch to iCloud
3. Perform a reset of all content and settings (you can do this from your Settings)
4. Restore your device as if it were brand new
5. Re-install the Tapped Out app
6. Log back into your Origin Account
7. Enjoy playing Tapped Out without crashing every few minutes.

It’s important to delete the app before the backup. If you don’t, the app data cached locally on your device is still there, and it’s possible that issues such as constant crashing and an inability to add friends are due to improperly cached data on the device. If you reset and restore your iPad without deleting the app first, you are potentially restoring this bad data right back to your device.

Let me know how it goes.

There would have to be server issues while I’m taking a break from my blog! Thanks to everyone who pointed people in the right direction. But the important thing to do if you can’t get into your game or all your friends are missing is not to panic. Like a bad relationship – it’s probably not you, it’s them.

As to why there are so many server issues – well, there could be a couple of reasons for this. The game servers seem to have more issues before or after a major update. I’m noticing it more now that the blog is on a dedicated server as well – things get a little glitchy when so many people are hitting it at the same time. (Even my Spamguard can’t keep up and just decides to put people’s comments in moderation while it sorts things out!)

But, the real reason I suspect is that there is significant server maintenance going on ahead of the Squidport update, with so many items added to the game at once, and the layouts of everyone’s towns changing to accomodate the seashore expansion. I’m expecting more of this kind of thing right up until the release of the Squidport expansion and probably afterwards as well. So, from the technical support page, here’s a handy guide to what you can do:

  1. Don’t panic or get angry.
  2. Check the usual sources to see see whether it’s something that’s just affecting you or seems to be affecting others, too. As well as this blog, take a look at the official Facebook page -  it tends to go into meltdown at any drop in playability.
  3. Check the status of the Origin servers at http://www.origin.com/status – they control getting you into the game, keeping you there, and whether or not you can visit your friends. If either the account or social servers are orange or red, this could be the source of the problem you are having. (You can also follow the status on Twitter at @OriginStatus). It’s worth bookmarking this page.
  4. Don’t forget to check the web page of your local mobile or wifi provider. It’s the second decade of the twenty-first century, but many of us are still not getting what we’re paying for. And it’s worth remembering that “unlimited data downloads” are not always unlimited. Some providers put a speed cap on your service when you reach a certain limit. Check your contract.

- also, read these posts on what to do and what not to do: I can’t get into my game or see my friends and My game wants me to create a new account.

There are many, many questions still coming in on this very day, so here’s a repost on the joint task issue…

The update doesn’t seem to have fixed the glitch affecting many of the joint tasks – and that means that the level 29 task for Agnes and Comic Book Guy to go on a date continues to be affected as are a number of others. I’ll, tell you what you can do for this particular task in a moment because it’s relatively easy to deal with, but first a recap…

The glitch was first noticed right back at the beginning of Whacking Day, and you can see a post on that here. It initially affected Burns and Smithers and their “exercise” task. It became a bit more frustrating when the Rich Texan couldn’t stay on his mechanical bull (as the task is so long and he’s a premium character) and appeared again with Legs and Louie’s level 28 task to interrogate a squealer. You can read about the tasks affected by this glitch here, where you can also see a video that Mike made illustrating the problem, which I’m reposting below:

It seems that joint tasks are likely to be interrupted by a few things – building, decorating and moving things around are the main culprits. And it seems that some tasks involving props, like the Rick Texan and his mechanical bull and some of the performances on the Open Air Stage, are affected in the same way.

The easy solution where the task is short, like Agnes and Comic Book Guy’s date, is to make setting up the task the last thing you do before you exit the game, and then to go and do something else for the two hours it takes to complete. When you return to your game, it should have finished normally. You could always spend donuts to speed over the task, I suppose, but this way is just a little easier and doesn’t require any expense.

Hopefully, this will all be resolved with the App Store/Google Play update we should get once Squidport finally arrives.

Note: One more thing on the joint tasks for people playing them for the first time – both characters need to be free at the same time for them to unlock.

With level 30 just released, the XP bar continues it’s extremely strange behavior, and seems to be continuing to different things for different level 30 players.

What’s supposed to happen is that as soon as a new level is released, the pink XP bar that you get at the bonus levels turns blue again and starts from the beginning, leveling you up to a maximum of around 120,000 or so until you hit the end-of-level-30 bonus level and get the chance to win up to 3 donuts. Once that’s happened, it should turn pink again and head towards an XP maximum that’s 20% above the last XP maximum.

For many people, though, it doesn’t seem to be working that way. When level 30 landed, I heard the “level up” strum, and I was already at the first bonus level after level 30. I left the game to continue posting here and, when I went back again, I heard another “level up” strum and discovered that my XP bar was now sitting at 103036 and on the way to a maximum of 165600 ( you can see this in the screenshot below):

image
That’s not really how things are meant to be working, but it’s the kind of strange XP bar behavior that’s been going on for a couple of months now. Other players have reported their XP bar taking them back to level 29 after moving up to level 30, which is far more frustrating than the glitch I’ve been experiencing. At least I got the bonus donuts twice! And as much as I’m grateful, I’m hoping this is something else that will finally be fixed with the next Google Play/App Store update so that it’s a level playing field for everyone.

Homer Simpson 2

Thanks to Mike Shuman for prompting this post.

The Origin servers have been a bit wonky for a few days now. Many players, especially Android players, have gone into their games only to discover that all their friends have disappeared. Like many of the other server problems the game experiences, this is yet another situation where the best advice is not to panic.

You can check the server status page at http://www.origin.com/status, but sometimes that won’t tell you anything – particularly if it’s a local server issue. Check the official Facebook page as well – if others are having problems, then there’s at least comfort in knowing that you are not alone!

The Origin servers run the social part of the game and this seems to happen at, shortly before, or shortly after every major update. Your friends will come back again – they always do – usually within an hour or two, but often less.

Getting a message that your other device didn’t save can be worrying – particularly if you don’t have another device. I first posted this a few months ago (which is why the splash screens look different from the one you’re seeing at the moment), but it’s something I need to repost every time the message surfaces for more than a few readers of this blog. And it’s really worth reading the comments as well…

Sometimes, if your internet connection drops while you’re playing the game, you’ll get this message:

medium
Don’t worry – if you really don’t have another device, it’s still safe to proceed. Tap on “play now” and you’ll see this message:

image
If you don’t have another device, it’s generally safe to tap “Continue” – there’s usually no progress lost at all.

By the way, if you actually do have another device, it’s perfectly normal to see this message. All you have to do is do what it tells you and everything should be okay.

I’m reposting this from earlier in the week, as I’m getting new reports of server issues..

Don’t listen to it whatever you do. You don’t need a new account – the servers are just having trouble.

If you ever get a message that you need to create a new account, back out, hard close your game, and consider a delete and reinstall. If that doesn’t work, it’s because the servers are having bigger problems. Put down your game for an hour or two, then try again. And NEVER create a new account with the same email address as your old one. Doing that may just erase your game.

One more thing – don’t panic. It’s probably not just happening to you, and your game is still okay. This is just something that happens from time to time. Usually it’s just a matter of waiting it out.

Note: if this happens, it’s always a good idea to check the Origin server status, and you can do this here http://www.origin.com/status . If the servers are up and down, though, you may not get a reliable indication of their status.

Simpsons

A few people have commented on the Open Air Stage glitch over the last week. The glitch affects the performances of Willie and Lisa, but can go on to have an impact on the performances of other characters:

From linzdrabble:
Noticed this glitch just now. Had sent Willie to play the bagpipes came back and the stage was flashing but he was standing in front bare chested. Clicked the stage and it’s still showing the task.

image
And from Jason, who also identified the solution:
If Willie is in his Bare-Chested costume before you select him to perform on the Open Air Stage he will just stand in front of it and do nothing, nevertheless you will still get your $ and XP, but the next time change his costume back to default before selecting him to play in the open air stage.

It seems that for your Willie and Lisa to successfully carry out their Open Air Stage task in a glitch-free way, you need to make sure that they’re in their regular costumes when you send them to perform. So, if Lisa is in her Gymnastic Lisa costume or Willie is in his Bar-chested Willie costume, the performance is likely to glitch. That’s because their performances are tied to tasks that they only carry out when they’re in the regular clothes.

And while we’re talking about the Open Air Stage, here’s a comment and a request for help from CruisyBoy:
Is it just me or does anyone else find that rotating the Open Air Stage doesn’t achieve the desired effect? The reason I say this is because I can’t position the bench seats to face the stage to create an open amphitheatre type of environment. Any suggestions would be great.

There’s a glitch with the update that seems to be affecting Tapped Out players in Europe, the Middle East and Asia – and that’s being told by their device that the game is not available in their country. Don’t worry – it is.

For some reason the automatic update is sending you to the US store. But resolving this issue is easy – search up the game in your App Store / Google Play store. You should be able to update directly from there.

I really wanted to write a “How many snakes” post today but, honestly, after last week’s extension “incident”, I can’t really bring myself to do another one. All I can suggest as an alternative is to look at the distance between where you are now and your target, divide it by 3, and try to collect that number of snakes every day. Who knows exactly when the event will actually end? – it may be some time on Thursday, it may be on Friday, or it may be sometime around the next Olympics. But it’s best to be prepared.

Instead, here’s something from Keithemill on a problem that I’ve been hearing about a bit – the Scratch-R at the Kwik-E-Mart apparently crashing the app. My apologies to Keith for hanging on to this so long (in my defence, it’s been a busy 7 days). Here’s what he has to say (and note that he’s talking about the Scratch-R here, not the Golden Scratch-R):

Is anyone else having a problem when tapping on the Kwik-E-Mart? When I tap on the Scratch-R, it gives me a box titled “The Store” and it says “Retrieving item…” for several seconds (maybe even nearly a minute). Then it says (also in a box called “The Store”), “D’oh! A connection problem occurred. The requested action failed.” If I tap on “OK”, I get the usual “Kwik-E-Mart” box. But when I tap on the “250″ to purchase a regular “Scratch-R”, the app crashes. Sometimes I’ve gotten the Scratch-R to appear, but mostly it just crashes out to the home screen.

[But, I've] found a way to get my Scratch-R and not have it crash on me. When… [you] see the usual “Kwik-E-Mart” dialog box (with the option to buy the Golden Scratch-R, the regular Scratch-R and the timer for “Marking up Prices”). I don’t tap to buy the Scratch-R yet. Instead, I tap on the left (back) arrow at the top left of the dialog box to exit back to my Springfield. Then tap again on the Kwik-E-Mart and get the “Retrieving items…” message, followed by the “…The requested action failed.”

This time when I tap on “OK”, the Kwik-E-Mart dialog box comes up but without the option of purchasing the Golden Scratch-R. Then, I can click on the “250″ to purchase the regular Scratch-R and it doesn’t crash. Again… if you have this glitch, only click to buy the regular Scratch-R if you don’t see the option of buying a Golden Scratch-R.

I hope this helps people with this problem and thanks Keithemill.

It’s morning in Tokyo and a combination of jet lag, preparation for a presentation this morning, and unreasonable excitement about a possible update that sees my Springfield snake-free had me awake early. And as I checked into and out of my game, it produced a rather weird and wonderful range of texture glitches today (with one of them helping me to find that missing egg!)

Burns Manor has attracted most of them – and here are a few of the more interesting ones:

I’ve known about this Bluestacks for a while, but I haven’t posted on it. But it turns out that there’s good reason to post on it now – and that’s because it’s a helpful solution to the problem faced by many Android players of the game becoming inaccessible following large egg drops. While the problem can usually be resolved by going in on someone’s Apple device, not everyone has access to one. If you’re in that situation, Bluestacks gives you another way of getting things moving again yourself.

Here’s what Torrentninjauk has to say about it:

There is a program that will let you play Tapped Out on a PC and a Mac (and, in fact, play other Android games as well). It’s called Bluestacks and you can download it from http://www.bluestacks.com. Choose the program version that suits you, install it and then Run. You can then Install “The Simpsons Tapped Out”, locating it via the “Search” then install. All you have to do then is play.

Alternatively, if you already have the .apk file on your PC, you can put it into a new “apps folder”, double click, and it installs into Bluestacks. Then, you can play.

On a Mac, the setup is a little different. You won’t be able to install the .apk file from the desktop. You’ll need to run Bluestacks, install the Browser, and then enter the url of the .apk file. It will then download and install.

I play The Simpsons Tapped Out on a 27′ iMac, and I’ve also got it working on my MacBook Pro.

The program simply runs Android apps on a PC or Mac, which is great if your device memeory hasn’t been able to handle a large egg drop. Even though the egg drop crashed your game, going in through Bluestacks should allow you to collect up all your eggs so that you can play it once again on your mobile device. And that’ll mean you’ll be able to stay on track for those prize targets over the last few days of Whacking Day.

You can find a tutorial for it at : http://english.blog.eazel.com/how-to-install-and-play-the-simpsons-tapped-out-on-your-pc/, which is where the image below comes from.

Many Android players have been locked out of the game for quite some time now by a “cannot connect to the server” screen that just won’t go away. Here’s a comment from Killabob5447

Hey, I wanted to let you know that I haven’t been able to play in 6 days now, the “can’t connect to server” screen every time. I have been checking the blogs and it seem to be a widespread problem for Android users. I emailed them Friday about it with no response yet, and I called on Monday and they told me I would have to wait till the email I sent gets dealt with.

Here is a link to the thread: http://answers.ea.com/t5/The-Simpsons-Tapped-Out/Cannot-Connect-To-Server-on-Android/m-p/1066948#U1066948

I follow your blog everyday, and not being able to play is KILLING me. I have spent over 100 dollars on this game and im very disappointed with what is happening.

An anonymous reader also left this comment, which may help some people who have been affected:

I ran across your page when I was searching for a solution to the “Cannot connect to server” issue that I encountered last night. Unfortunately your solutions did not help me because it appears that the game session associated with my particular device ID had become corrupted in the communications with EA. Lucky for me I’ve got both an Android phone and an Android tablet so I just had to log in on the other, click Play Now when prompted that my Springfield had not been saved on my other device, and then gracefully exit the application. Once I had done so the session between my tablet device and the gaming servers was ‘reset’ and I was able to log back on using my tablet with no issue.

It certainly may not work for everyone, but I thought it worth mentioning.

For anyone who’s affected, this solution may be worth a try – beg or borrow (but don’t steal) another device and see if this works for you too.

Ever since Fort Sensible arrived as first prize in the Whacking Day, there have been reports of an unusual glitch that is likely to have an impact on anyone redesigning their town. Many people have reported that after putting one of the prize buildings in their Inventory, it needs another 24 hours to rebuild when they put it back into their Springfield.

This doesn’t seem to be a general glitch, however (I just tried storing and replacing my Fort Sensible and it didn’t need a rebuild). But, just in case it’s one that affects your game, my suggestion would be to exercise caution in placing the prize buildings in your Inventory – try it with one and see what happens when you take it out. If it looks like you need to rebuild your prize buildings, make sure you avoid the Inventory and, instead, place them in a temporary location in your town while you’re doing a redesign.

FS

About 10 days ago, I posted on the problem of the missing prizes (you can see the post here) – and it seems to be a problem that is still going on. For some people, it’s been a matter of looking in the wrong place for the prize (you should be checking the cardboard box in the left-hand corner of your build screen, as you can see here):

image
If it’s not in your Inventory, you’ll needs to report it to EA following the procedure just a few posts down. You may get the prize back (and some donuts as well by way of compensation), but be prepared for this to take some time.

None of this helps if your Expert Whacking License has gone missing and you’re no longer able to whack snakes in friends’ towns. Resolving the issue is likely to take a couple of weeks and getting it back after Whacking Day when it will be useless is no help whatsoever. This really only leaves you with three options:

1. Buy an Elite Whacking License for 50 donuts – this will activate your Baton mode again and you’ll be able to whack 10 snakes in each friend’s town.
2. Get an egg buddy by posting here (not in the comments section to this post).
3. Comment on this post with a link to a screenshot of what it looks like when you visit a friend so that other readers can see what’s happened to your game and help you out. The screenshot is important – I won’t be clearing requests for help in the comments to this post without one. (You can upload it to Facebook or an image site and link it here.) Let us know how many snakes you have as well.

The Elite Whacking License is probably the most reliable way to get you back on track, but the egg buddy route has also proven successful for many players who have faced the same problem during the event.

image

Just a word of advice for generous egg donors – be careful of how many eggs you give away at one time.

A number of players have reported that, following large egg drops from friends, they’ve been unable to get into their games. Here’s one from Michael:

Have an issue that just came up today. Egg buddy left me 500+ eggs and now I cannot get back into my game. Has anyone had this issue or if they know what I may try to get this corrected? I have tried powering off my phone and taking battery out. I am at a loss here and a little addicted to this game.

As I’ve taken a look at a couple of these and have been able to get in for them on an iPhone5 with lots of memory free, it sounds like one side-effect of a very generous egg drop has been to test the limit of the memory on their device. I’d suggest trying to log in on a friend’s device or clearing off some Apps or date you no longer need.

So, with that in mind, here’s some very good advice from Dodo:

Just a little piece of advice, do not make a [very large] egg donation. You may be hoping to help someone, but might end up crashing their Springfield. It looks like the game [may] not be able to load a large amount of eggs at the same time.

I left 500+ eggs for a friend and her Springfield crashed every time she tried to load it. It seems like up to 200 eggs at a time is ok.

So, if you are willing to share a large amount of eggs, do it, but just not in one large drop.

EA have been a little more communicative of late. In the last few days there’s finally been a response to the problem faced by many iOs and Android players of their towns being reset to level 1.

According to EAUrsula in this post on ea.answers.com, the studio have now managed to fix a lot of people’s towns and restore them to the correct level. If you’ve had this problem, she recommends getting in touch with customer support, and sets out how you need to do this:

1. Go to www.help.ea and log in with your origin account. The login button is at the top of the page:

image
2. Once you’ve logged in, you should be able to see your name in the top right:

image
3. Use this link to get to the correct page. It should look like this:

image
I hope that’s helpful for people who’ve had this problem (and, indeed, others). It would also be useful if you’re using this channel to let us all know the response and how long it currently takes to get your Springfield back – and whether you get any donuts as compensation.
