Archives for posts with tag: donuts

I’ve addressed this question before, but there are a few questions on this in the comments, so I thought it was time for a repost.

Up until you reach level 30, your XP bar is blue and fills up normally. But when you get to level 30, a little gift box appears at the end of the XP bar indicating that you won’t be moving to level 31 (because it hasn’t been released yet). Instead, you’ll be hitting a bonus level.

Once you reach the end of level 30, a popup appears giving you a choice of 1, 2 or 3 donuts:

image
This is what you’ll see if you’re lucky enough to win 3 donuts on your first pick:

image
If you don’t win 3 donuts the first time, you can pay $50,000 for a second chance:

image
If you won 1 donut the first time, paid for a second chance and won 2, then you keep the 2 donuts you won the second time (they’re not accumulated with your first win) if you stop there. If you won 2 donuts the first time, but only picked up 1 donut the second time, then you get to keep the highest number. And if you’re not happy with your second pick, you can pay another $50,000 for a third and final pick, where you’ll certainly end up with 3 donuts. But the maximum number of donuts you can win at any bonus level is 3, no matter how much money you pay. And that’s because all you’re really paying for is a second and third shot at the 3 donuts that you may well have won first time round had luck been with you.

Three more things happen:

1. Your XP bar turns pink. Behind the scenes, your blue XP bar is full and waiting for the next level. When level 31 is released, you’ll automatically level up and your blue XP bar will appear again, no matter how full your pink XP bar is at the time. In the meantime, you’re playing the bonus game, which means that you’re filling up a completely different XP bar.

2. The game continues to show you as being at level 30 – and that’s because, as at the date of this post, there is no level 31.

3. Your XP maximum changes. It will also increase by 20% each time you pass through a bonus level.

Remember, that second or third chance costs you – but it’s also currently the only way you can use game dollars to buy donuts.

Hey everyone. Yes, this week’s title is a lame pun intended to parody a line from Hamlet which basically means, are donuts the way to go?  Should you buy them? Yes, we’ve covered this here before, but I think it’s time I did a bit of essaying about it myself.

Well, as we know, TSTO is a free game and it can be played in its entirety without spending a penny. But, for EA to keep developing new content and maintaining the servers, there needs to be a paid element to it, the premium items, where we can spend money so we feel like we’re complete, and EA rake it in for themselves. This is EA’s highest grossing game, however, so you don’t necessarily need to pay anything yourself to still enjoy the game, because lots of other people are buying things. You might still want to! That’s fine, that’s great. Nothing wrong with wanting a bit of extra premium content for your game.

So, exactly what package and price and frequency should I buy my donuts at? Luckily, you can just read about that here so I don’t have to fill up this post with it. If you’re only an occasional donut buyer, I would say go with the Golden Scratch-R; you can get up to 100 donuts for only 69p, (see odds) which is extremely good value if the gambling pays off. If it doesn’t, you’ve still got at least 6 donuts to spend on buildings and land expansions, which is better than none.

More posts coming later today!

film_concours_donut

There are some different views on the Squidport expansion. Some feel that the builds are just right and fit the pace of the game. Others are frustrated that they can’t build a great Squidport fast enough. Honestly, I’m in the first category for the most part. After all, it’s taken me 9 months or more to have the Springfield I have and that still isn’t finished.

But rather than asking what you think about the pace, I thought it would be interesting to find out what everyone is doing. Are you speeding everything up or nothing at all – or are you doing using your donuts to speed up some parts but not others?

Place your vote and then see what everyone else is doing.

Another guest post from Mike Shuman:
To keep in line with previous posts regarding premium buildings and characters and due to the very unfortunate but hopefully temporary absence of TSTOTips, I figured I’d take on the Community Center since Rcsprinter cannot and I’ve already got it.

20130606-084429 PM.jpg
The Community Center is the premium option for Level 30 as many of us already know. It costs 150 donuts and buying it also gives you Jasper. SO the big question is, should I buy it?
Just to state first off, it is NOT necessary to acquire the Community Center and not having Jasper does not affect the Level 30 storyline whatsoever. Let me start with the cons of buying this building
1. At 150 donuts, it’s a rather pricey investment. For those with limited budgets it’s kinda hard to part with that many donuts so close to the release of the Squidport(hopefully).
2. There are no quests involving this building from any character in the game so it’s yet another unusable building.
3. For the PG-13 crowd, a quest or two involving Jasper can perceived as a little sensitive to youngsters and those that do not care for drug references or jokes(although I found it pretty funny)
4. This reason not to buy the Community Center is actually a pro and a con. It is not a limited time building meaning there’s no rush to buy it now. It will always be available so if you want it but don’t wanna spend your donuts because of what may or may not be coming, you don’t have to.
5. Lastly, I do not believe that this building contributes anything to your Conform-O-Meter ratings whatsoever. I may be wrong so correct me if I am.

20130606-084509 PM.jpg
Now onto the pros of buying the Community Center
1. It comes with Jasper who will complete your Oldies set of characters, and has a voice
2. Although it is unusable to any character, it does generate $135 and 15 XP every four hours so at least it generates income for the life of your game.
3. If you’re a completist like myself you will have to buy this, just to say you did and to have in your town.
4. It is a nice looking building and a good addition. Some people do not care if the buildings are usable, they just contribute to what an “ideal” town or community would look like or to what people have imagined for their towns.
I know there’s not much in the way of pros and cons but it’s not a very complex building aside from the fact that it comes with Jasper. The biggest thing to note is it is NOT required to advance in the game and it is not a limited time building so it will always be available for those that really want it but just can’t or do not wish to get it now. Personally, I bought it as I do every premium item and character and I love it. I hope I have been able to at least help out for those on the fence about buying the Community Center. I’ve attached a picture of mine to help sway those that are having trouble decorating it. See ya soon!

I’ve posted on this before, but I’ve been a little amazed to see the number of people who finished the level 30 quest in just a couple of days, so here’s a repost.

Donuts are precious – and the great thing about the game is that there’s no requirement for you to use them to move ahead. They’re best saved for the premium items (especially anything that’s limited time) – they add value to the game and earn you more money at the same time.

The entire game takes up to about 6 months to get through at this point. And Level 30, at a normal rate of play, should probably take a week to 10 days – EA certainly seems to have planned it that way, as there are several quite long tasks. Spending donuts on speeding up tasks or builds just means, at the higher levels of the game, that there’s a lot more down time before the next big thing happens.

And for lower level players, the game is at its most enjoyable once you adjust to its rhythm. Take the scenic route, rather than the expressway and you’ll enjoy it far more!

Note: the early commesnts on the post came in prior to the “confirm donut spend option”

One of the things that changes every time a new level is a released is the XP bar maximums at the upper levels. And that’s because it seems that the same multipliers that apply to buildings also apply to the XP bar maximums (although it would be great to have some confirmation):

Level 25: 1.3x
Level 26: 1.3x
Level 27: 1.4x
Level 28: 1.6x
Level 29: 2x
Level 30: 3x

Here’s the base XP you currently need at each level and the number of donuts you get for hitting each level. Remember to apply the multipliers for level 25 and above to see whether it represents what’s at the top of your XP bar:

Level 1-2: 40XP (no donuts)
Level 2-3: 75XP (1 donut as you start level 2)
Level 3-4: 85XP (1 donut)
Level 4-5: 120XP (1 donut)
Level 5-6: 250XP (1 donut)

image
Level 6-7: 800XP (1 donut)
Level 7-8: 1,800XP (1 donut)
Level 8-9: 3,200XP (2 donuts)
Level 9-10: 5,000XP (1 donut)
Level 10-11: 8,000XP (1 donut)
Level 11-12: 12,000XP (2 donuts)
Level 12-13: 15,500XP (1 donut)
Level 13-14: 18,000XP (2 donuts)
Level 14-15: 21,000XP (1 donut)
Level 15-16: 24,000XP (1 donut)

image
Level 16-17: 25,500XP (1 donut)
Level 17-18: 21,560XP (1 donut)
Level 18-19: 22,960XP (1 donut)
Level 19-20: 24,440XP (1 donut)
Level 20-21: 26,000XP (2 donuts)
Level 21-22: 27,640XP (1 donut)
Level 22-23: 29,360XP (1 donut)
Level 23-24: 31,160XP (1 donut)
Level 24-25: 33,040XP (2 donuts)
Level 25-26: 35,000XP (1 donut)

image
Level 26-27: 37,040XP (2 donuts)
Level 27-28: 39,160XP (1 donut)
Level 28-29: 41,360XP (1 donut)
Level 29-30: 43,640XP (1 donut)

image
Level 30-bonus level: 46,000XP (2 donuts when level 31 arrives)

It’s the weekend and a new level makes it just that little bit brighter. So, the question for this weekend’s poll is very simple – will you be spending your donuts on Jasper and the Community Center? There’ll be a full post soon enough on whether they’re worth your donuts, but vote now based on what you’re currently thinking and see what everyone else is planning to do.

And don’t forget the other poll that’s currently running here, looking at the age distribution of people who play this game and read this blog. You can find it here.

pta_disbandsjasper

The new buildings and decorations don’t do very much to help you hit those impossibly high Conform-o-meter points that you can see a couple of posts below this one, but most of them do help a bit. The exception seems to be the Community Center, as you can see in the table below.

Please note that for the buildings, I’ve used the base price and base XP from the files – the price and XP that they will eventually settle at when the multiplier stops operating on them. And, as I’ve just realised, the multipliers in the files apply to the XP you gain from completing a building as well as it’s price. To save you looking back, here are the multipliers that are currently at work on the upper levels:

Level 25: 1.3x
Level 26: 1.3x
Level 27: 1.4x
Level 28: 1.6x
Level 29: 2x
Level 30: 3x

So, here’s the contribution that each of the new items makes:

Building / Decoration Base price Base XP on completion Rating Points
Herman’s Military Antiques $83,000 7500 Consumerism 10
Zesty’s $68,000 7000 Gluttony 10
Community Center 150 donuts 150
Training Dummy $4500 500 Vanity 500
Bomb Shelter $5600 550 Vanity 560
Miniature Nuclear Warhead 45 donuts 45 Vanity 400

There’ll be a post coming in the next couple of days on whether it’s worth spending 150 donuts on Jasper and the Community Center, but for those considering it, here’s what the Community Center looks like:

image
It earns you $135 and 15XP every four hours but strangely, Jasper has no tasks that involve it and nor do any of your other Springfielders. Perhaps not so strange though, given what you see when you tap on it:

image
There’s no hurry to buy it as it’s not limited time. If you’re on a donut budget, my advice would be to wait and see what appears in the game in the next week or two.

And for those who are wondering – yes, Jasper has a voice.

For some reason I’ve been finding this a post that’s difficult to write, which is why it’s taken so long to get to. I’m not sure why but it may be partly due to the size of the building and partly due to the 200 donut price tag. It was the last of the original premium decorations that I bought, so maybe that has something to do with it. But, as you’ll see, there are some good reasons to buy Hank and his giant pink hideout.

image
So, first, let’s take a look at Hank’s tasks:

Task Length Dollars XP
Deliver ultimatum to the G8 nations (at Town Hall) 60 minutes $105 26XP
Interrogate Mr. Bont (at Volcano Lair) 4 hours $260 70XP
Take a fun run (outdoors) 6 hours $350 90XP
Test flame thrower (outdoors) 8 hours $420 105XP
Proceed with Project Arcturus (Volcano Lair) 12 hours $600 150XP
Be a great boss (Volcano Lair) 24 hours $1000 225XP

image
So, why is Hank and the Volcano Lair worth your hard-earned or -won donuts?:

1. Hank is the most expensive of the premium characters to actually earn the premium rate – Barney and Miss Springfield are more expensive, but as they were both event prizes, they only earn the regular rate for their jobs.
2. The Volcano Lair animation that you see when Hank is inside either being a great boss, interrogating his nemesis, or planning world domination is one of the best building animations in the game.
3. The Volcano Lair earns at a reasonable rate of $500 and 50XP every 24 hours – not the best rate, but by no means the worst, either.
4. Hank comes with a short quest that works through most of his tasks with a short storyline, giving you something to do if you’re waiting for other things to happen in the game.
5. Hank testing his flame thrower is one of my favorite character tasks in the game.
6. The sound when you tap on the Volcano Lair gives you the impression that Hank is also running a night club in his spare time.
7. If your New Springfield is getting a little chaotic with all these new characters, perhaps a little word domination is the solution.

image
And some reasons against:

1. It’s big and pink and at 11×12 squares takes up a lot of room and can be quite difficult to place.
2. The Volcano Lair makes no contribution to any of the Conform-o-meter ratings.
3. Only two of Hank’s tasks are outdoors.
4. At 200 donuts, Hank and his Lair is the third-most expensive premium character and building combination in the game.
5. Hank has no voice, being voiced in the series by Albert Brooks, rather than any of the 6 main cast members.
6. The Lair is not actually in Springfield at all – it’s in Cypress Creek!
7. World domination is so 1990s.

Completists will have no problem buying Hank and the Lair. But if you’re a more cautious in your premium purchases, you may want to think about it a little more.

According to The Files (and I’m now going to start capitalizing this term to give it that extra air of mystery), the Yard Sale is due to end at midnight on Wednesday, May 29 in the US. Now, exactly which midnight they’re referring to depends very much on what the developers are referring to. In some quarters it means the first moment of Wednesday, but for other people it means the last moment. Based on what I’ve seen in the past and other start and end dates, I think they could mean the second but I really can’t be sure. And as to which midnight – the US has a lot of them. I’ve long suspected that the game runs off Central time, but can’t quite be sure (just due to the fact that the “morning” updates often seem to hit soon after the business day has begun in that time zone).

There’s been no indication from EA through Facebook or Twitter that there’s only one day to go, although this isn’t unusual. It wouldn’t be unheard of for it to be extended, either (please don’t mention the-event-that-shall-not-be-named AKA Whacking Day), and that may happen if something isn’t ready to launch or there are some bugs that need ironing out in the next big thing.

Either way, don’t plan for any of the Yard Sale items to be around for too much longer – so if you think any of them are worth adding to your town, you’ll need to stock up while you can. And if you haven’t bought any of them yet and would like some help, see this post.

250px-Devil_Donuts_donut_cart

Some of you may have some donuts burning a hole in your pocket as a result of the Gil sale. While my advice is to hang on to them for a couple more days while we see what happens at the next update, I realize that temptation to spend a few may be too great, especially when it comes to the cheaper items.

In response to the post “What should I do with my Day-old Donuts?” post, budvugger came up with this great set of calculations:

I bought a bundle of 2400 and used half to increase my bonuses and I am going to save the other half for future use. I made a quick breakdown of the premium items that are available for multiple purchases for their values. The following is a calculation of bonus percentage per 100 donuts spent. Obviously you can’t spend exactly 100 donuts on all these items: for example, 100 donuts would only buy 2.5 Police Cars (it’s not possible to buy a half, I know) but at 2% a car, that would hypothetically equal a 5% bump if you could do it.

5% per 100 spent: Miniature Nuclear Warhead (45 donuts), Burns Limo (40 donuts), Channel 6 News Van (40 donuts), Picket Fence (1 donut), Homer’s Hammock (5 donuts), Police Car (40 donuts)

4.5% per 100 spent: Duff Party Bus (no longer available)

4.16% per 100 spent: Bench (6 donuts) and Hot Tub (60 donuts)

3.92% per 100 spent: Duff-Barney Blimp (no longer available)

3.33% per 100 spent: Apple and Orange Trees (15 donuts)

2.5% per 100 spent: Excellence Prize Statue (no longer available), Tetherball (20 donuts), Cannon (20 donuts), Burning Bush (20 donuts), Tree Swing (20 donuts), Dumpster (10 donuts), Flower Planter (10 donuts)

2.49% per 100 spent: Worldwide Broadcast Dish (30 donuts), Piece-of-Crap Car (30 donuts), Inflatable Gorilla and Baboons (no longer available)

2.15% per 100 spent: Frinkosonic MHV, Giant Grasshopper (both no longer available)

1.66% per 100 spent: Ambulance (30 donuts)

That covers all the premiums that you can buy more than one of on my menu currently. Have fun

It’s worth noting that the Police Car also gives you 200 Obedience points, the Wordwide Broadcast Dish and the Channel 6 News Van open up new tasks for you at Channel 6, and that the Yard sale items will only be available for another day or so.

250px-Channel_6_van

Long-term players already know the answer to this one, so if you’ve been playing for a while, please skip over this post.

Gil is EA’s salesman and that’s his only role in the game. He’s been popping up every so often since December 2012 to make Tapped Out players an offer too good to refuse and keep his kids from starving. He usually hangs around for a few days begging you to help him out and then he disappears until the next deal.

Personally, I wish EA could come up with a way for him to hang around between sales, although without constantly begging you to hand over your hard-earned real world cash. I really like him as a character and I’m sure that the developers could come up with some great quests and tasks for him. On top of that, it seems such a waste of a character with a voice to have him simply disappear for months on end!

And when will he be back? I really have no idea, particularly as this sale was a bit of a surprise. And whether we’ll see discounted donuts again before Krustyland will really depend on how successful this sale has been.

If you didn’t manage to whack your way to Tatum during Whacking Day, you’ve probably been wondering whether he’s worth the 190 doonuts that he and the Coliseum are now going for. The short answer is, I’m not sure…

image
To help you make your decision, here’s Tatum’s task list:

Task Length Dollars XP
Dine at the Truffle 2 hours $110 27XP
Walk the Tiger (outdoors) 4 hours $175 45XP
Step into the ring (at the Coliseum) 8 hours $275 70XP
Answer questions at the Police Station 12 hours $420 100XP
Stay in shape (outdoors) 24 hours $600 150XP

image
With a task list that’s not exactly persuasive, why would you spend your donuts on him? Here a few reasons in his favor:

1. He’s a character with a building (although it’s a fairly chunky 12×10 building) – and characters with buildings are generally more attractive purchases. The Coliseum earns $200 and 22XP every 8 hours.
2. He has a short quest, adding a little variety to the game while you’re waiting for the next big thing to come along (you can read through the quest here).
3. He has a voice (although the voice is one of the softer ones).
4. He has a tiger – and the tiger is actually the strongest reason in his favor. He can join Krusty and his monkey, the Reverend Lovejoy and his dog, and Burns and his hounds in promenading around your New Springfield.

image
There’s a fair few reasons why you may choose to ignore his inglorious return to Springfield, though:

1. Despite being at the expensive end of the premium scale, there’s no 50% bonus on his jobs and XP. That’s fairly typical of premium items that were initially given away free – and Miss Springfield and Barney both fall into the same category.
2. His voice, like a few of the others seems soft – at times you can barely hear it.
3. He has no one-hour task, and only 2 of his 5 tasks are outdoors.
4. The Coliseum is kind of chunky and it takes a little work to make it look good.
5. He’s the only character to use the Coliseum, which seems like another waste of a building. While the sign of the entrance says Tatum vs. Simpsons, there’s so task for any of the Simpsons to go and fight him there. So, no rematch for Homer.

So, what this really means is that Tatum isn’t a premium character that needs to be at the top of your purchase list. And if you’re frugal with your donuts, don’t feel that you’re missing out by not having him in your Springfield. Let him go off and make The Hangover 3, and then he can pay for his own return!

As of the time of posting, there’s less than 10 hours on old Gil’s timer and that means the day-old donuts will soon be a thing of the past. So, if you’ve been putting off making a purchase decision, later may well be too late.

While you’re deciding whether to make a purchase (or another purchase!), here’s what happened when Gil arrived in tha game (he was hiding behind a tree, though, when he arrived in my game):

image
Homer: Mmm… donuts.
Lisa: You’re not really planning to eat those stale donuts, are you?
Homer: No. I’m going to purchase Professor Frink, have him build a time machine, then travel back in time to when the donuts were still fresh. And then eat them.

image
But old-Gil doesn’t give up – he just keeps trying. On successive taps, these are some of the sales tactics he’s used:

  • C’mon, Gil really needs this. They’re going to take my kidney!
  • Please buy some something this time. I’m going to lose my kids!
  • I’m just trying to earn enough money to get my real eyes back.
  • Please buy something. I can’t sell anymore blood. Uwooh…
  • Alright Gil, remember… ABCD: Always Be Closing Donuts!
  • Just one more sale and I’ll finally have that hot plate paid for.
  • If you won’t buy something, can you at least push me in front of an expensive looking car?
  • Oh boy, oh boy, you’re back! Come on Gil., don’t screw this up again.
  • You have no idea how much I need this.
  • Alright Gil. You can maybe do it this time.

I think I got them all – but if I missed any, please comment and I’ll add to the list of Gil-isms. It doesn’t look like Krusty is convinced though!

image

With Gil and his day-old donuts here and Squidport on the way, it’s easy to forget that the Yard Sale to mark the end of season 24 of the series in the US is still going on. Homer very unkindly calls the selection of items on offer “junk”, and it may well be the right term for some of this rather odd selection of items.

So, on the basis that many of you have Gil’s donuts burning a hole in your pocket, is any of it worth buying? Here’s what you said in the poll that ran on this site over the last 10-ish days:

image
Here’s the breakdown:

Duff Party Bus: 47.13%
Duff-Barney Blimp: 22.6%
Frink’s Robot Dog: 15.56%
Frinkosonic MHV: 5.3%
Excellence Prize Statue: 4.74%
Inflatable Gorilla and Baboons: 2.82%
Giant Grasshopper: 1.85%

The poll makes the Duff Party Bus a clear winner, but if you’d like to make up your own mind, you can take a look at the following posts:

What episode is the Excellence Prize Statue from and should I spend my donuts on it?
What episode is the Inflatable Gorilla and Baboons from and should I spend my donuts on them?
What episode is the Frinkosonic MHV from and should I spend my donuts on it?
What episode is the Giant Grasshopper from and should I spend my donuts on it?
Should I spend my donuts on Frink’s Robot Dog?
What episode is the Duff Party Bus from and should I spend my donuts on it?
What episode is the Duff-Barney Blimp from and should I spend my donuts on it?

Remember, the Yard Sale items are likely to only available until Wednesday or Thursday US and you may never have the chance to add them to your game again. Although, honestly, for at least a couple of items, that’s unlikely to generate much crying, wailing or gnashing of teeth.

simpsons35

Note that ANIMATION on FOX have now taken down some of the videos used in some of the posts.

This question came through from jaydiggity shortly after TSTOTips came back to life after its brief stint in the land of the forbidden:

I’m not a huge donut guy and I do not have many premium buildings or characters. I am going to buy 900 donuts from Ol’ Gil and I wanted to ask you:  What you would purchase (rank order) with 900 donuts — items and characters available today? How many donuts would you hold onto for the near term (4-6 months)? I’ve read your premium guides but I’d love to see your “top to bottom” list of the major premium items. Thanks!!

What does everyone think? What should jaydiggity do with those day-old donuts? What do you think are the best premium items to buy – and should he really spend them now or would it be wiser to hang onto them?

image168

In a comment lost in transition, Mickus 20 reminded everyone to check their Confirm Donut Spend button. The combination of a glitchy update or two and the server problems at the start of the weekend seem to have resulted in this switching off for a number of people (me included). So, take a look now and see that it’s where it should be to avoid accidentally spending any of those donuts you may have bought from Gil.

If you want to know how to do this, see this post: http://wp.me/p3zd4h-1v3 .

homer-512x288

According to the poll here , somewhere around 49% of the readers of this blog have been tempted by Gil’s 25% donut deal. Now, with just on 24 hours to go at the time of posting, here’s another poll on a question many readers have been asking (mostly through Twitter, strangely :-) ) – which package are you buying.

I’m leaving a “none” option so that everyone can play, so why not vote and see what everyone else is doing. If for some reason, you can’t access the poll (and I’m prepared for all eventualities now), here’s a direct link. Otherwise, cast your vote below (and you should be able to guess my purchase decision from the picture below the poll!).

image

There have been a few requests for a poll on Gil’s offer – so here’s the poll!

This is the fifth time Gil has appeared in the game with an unbeatable deal, and it’s probably his best offer yet – 25% off donuts. The last “Day-old Donut” sale gave 25% more for the same price, so this brand-new offer makes donut purchases that little bit more viable. And we know that Squidport is coming soon with its own set of donut demands.

So will you be helping Gil to keep his kidneys – or have the glitches that people have been reporting put you off? I think I’ve given enough options to cover all the bases, so vote and see what others are doing or planning to do.
